Six Interior Design Trends for 2026

The world of interior design is in constant motion. Some ideas fade, others return, and our understanding of comfort, style, and harmony evolves along with them. As 2026 approaches, I reviewed insights from 11 reliable sources, global design studios, and colour experts, combining their predictions with my professional experience to bring you the six key interior design trends for the year ahead.

The Evolution of Neutrals

For the past decade, cool grey tones have dominated interiors, but they are gradually giving way to warmer, more natural, and organic hues. This shift is echoed by the Pantone Colour Institute, which recently announced Cloud Dancer, a soft, chalky white, as the Colour of the Year 2026 – the first time a white shade has held the title since 1999.

While neutral colours remain an excellent foundation, they are becoming richer and more expressive, helping to reveal a room’s character. In 2026, neutrals will take on the depth of earth, clay, warm sand, and mushroom tones, blending subtly into muted browns, soft greens, mossy shades, and smoky blues. These palettes will create a comforting backdrop that pairs beautifully with both natural materials and bolder accents.

Craftsmanship and Texture

With mass-produced products accessible from every corner of the world, we are turning back towards craftsmanship, authenticity, natural materials, and unique pieces that cannot simply be ordered anywhere. This includes one-of-a-kind ceramics, hand-woven rugs, and vintage lighting discovered in antique shops.

Moving away from the smooth, empty surfaces popularised by minimalism, interiors now celebrate natural imperfections and asymmetry. Wood, stone, linen, wool, ceramics, textured walls, uneven finishes, and knitted or woven details are becoming increasingly prominent. These elements create interiors full of personality, stories, and humanity, highlighting an appreciation for originality, craftsmanship, and heritage.

Bringing the Indoors Outdoors

This trend is particularly relevant for homeowners, yet increasingly noticeable among those with larger balconies and terraces in city apartments: transforming outdoor areas into fully fledged living spaces. Instead of the classic table, chair, and a few plants, enclosed terraces are now featuring rugs, cushioned seating, soft textiles, atmospheric lighting, and curtains. Their overall aesthetic mirrors the interior, making them feel like an additional room.

The motivation behind this shift is a desire to spend more time outdoors in natural light while extending the comfort and warmth of the home to spaces previously defined by practicality. This is especially relevant in Lithuania, where terraces are typically enjoyed only during the warmer months.

The New Recipe for Kitchen Design

Modern kitchens have become hubs of functionality and technology, but in 2026, two equally strong trends will define their character.

The first is wood. Natural wood cabinetry, shelving, and even lighting are rising in popularity, although worktops are likely to remain largely unchanged. As a space where many of us spend considerable time, wood introduces warmth and a sense of life, creating an area that is not only practical but also cosy and inviting.

The second trend is tiles. While their easy maintenance is perhaps their most obvious advantage, tiles do not need to be plain or dull. Patterned and illustrated tiles are making a comeback, bringing more character into the kitchen. Speaking of tiles, I recently visited some truly impressive tile factories in Italy – you can read about that HERE.

Biophilic Design: Nature at Home

One of the standout trends of the present and coming years is biophilic design, which perfectly reflects the principles of slow living. In a world defined by technology, artificial intelligence, and a fast pace of life, it is only natural that we gravitate towards what feels genuine – and design follows suit.

We want more light (especially natural light), more greenery, more plants, and more natural materials like stone, wood, clay, and linen. These elements are complemented by earthy tones that cultivate a sense of comfort and calm amid an ever-accelerating world. Many of us would love to spend more time in nature, and this desire makes the trend of creating nature-inspired homes entirely understandable.

A New Take on Maximalism

Maximalism, which has long tried to nudge minimalism aside, is not new. However, next year it is expected to take on a more refined, creative, and personal form. Instead of chaotic collections of objects, we will see thoughtful, bold combinations of colours, patterns, textures, and shapes.
Vintage pieces will remain a cornerstone of maximalist style, but they will be accompanied by rich tones, sculptural furniture, and modern elements. The essence of this evolving maximalism is not the quantity of items but their harmony. Every piece carries its own story, yet what matters is the narrative they create together – their shared character and meaning.

These six directions, shaped by reliable sources and my own experience, are set to influence our home aesthetics most strongly in the year ahead. Trends are always shifting, but one thing has become increasingly clear: interiors are less about decoration and more about reflecting our lifestyle. How we shape our spaces reveals how we wish to feel – comfortable, safe, inspired, closer to nature, and more connected to ourselves. These trends are not rules to follow but guiding lights to help you discover your own style and create a home that reflects who you are. A home you truly want to be in.
